His Ministries provides Substance Abuse Counseling, Prevention Programs and Referral Services for the prevention and intervention of substance abuse. We are located in the beautiful mountain town of
Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
Take time to get to know us as we seek to serve and assist individuals families, and youth in our efforts to stop the destruction that substance abuse causes to families.
His Ministries was founded in 1996 after focusing on the plight of individuals with addictions and youth problems. We considered: How will the addict know there is help to overcome substance abuse if he or she does not know where help is to be found? How will our young people know there is another way of living, if they never see others modeling a lifestyle different from their own? Thereby, we were the first in our serving area to provide a referral service to assist the individual with a drug problem as we were the first to provide a teen center, The Edge Music Venue: Music on a Mission that gives area youth a positive environment preventing them from being involved in the wrong crowd.
His Ministries assist the alcoholic or addict, providing counseling, referrals, education and alternative activities for youth to give them a positive environment. We serve our community and the surrounding counties with the following programs and services:
· The Edge Music Venue for a positive environment for youth to hang out
· Counseling and referral services for individuals to overcome addictions
· A 12-week substance abuse program for those incarcerated
· SAMSON support: Steps And More Strength Overcoming Narcotics and other addictions is a program created by the director, taught individually, so one can begin to enjoy recovery through learning to use skills to overcome their addiction daily
· Provide basic essential needs for needy families, when supplies are available
· Speaking and educating on substance abuse
· The Edge Student Training Program purposes to reinforce positive behavior through job training in the operation of a music venue and thrift store. The thrift store is designed to give students training in small business as well as ability to assist needy families. We received a start up grant for building and equipment improvements, which have been completed. The store is operated by volunteers and we now work through operating polices. We recently met our monthly goal of sales and work on another goal to reach (09/5/2011).
His Ministries is a non-profit tax exempt corporation governed by a board of directors. The Executive Director, Shirley Smith is assisted by volunteers, mission groups and faithful supporters in its daily operations and in implementing the programs and services.
His Ministries is recognized and supported by the United Way of Southwest Virginia, Wise County Board of Supervisors, the Wal-Mart Foundation, Second Harvest of Southwest Virginia and many others, but because of the many great organizations requesting support from these entities, other avenues of support must be sought.
All donations and gifts are used to improve the programs provided and to improve the buildings and grounds of His Ministries/The Edge Music Venue and in the operation of the student training program. All Gifts are Tax Deductible
